Checking the Engine Oil

1. Warm Up the Engine:

   • If the engine is cold, idle the engine for 3 to 5 minutes. This allows the oil to circulate and reach its operating temperature, providing a more accurate reading.

2. Turn Off the Engine:

   • Switch the ignition to the OFF position and wait for 2 to 3 minutes. This waiting period allows the oil to settle back into the sump, ensuring an accurate measurement.

3. Position the Motorcycle:

   • Place your motorcycle in an upright position on a firm, level surface. This is crucial for getting an accurate oil level reading. The bike should be balanced and stable.

4. Check the Oil Level:

• Look at the oil level inspection window on the side of the engine. The oil level should be between the upper and lower level marks. If it's below the lower mark, you’ll need to add more oil.

Adding Engine Oil

If you find that the engine oil level is below or near the lower level mark, follow these steps to add the recommended engine oil:

1. Remove the Oil Fill Cap:

   • Carefully remove the oil fill cap located on the engine. Use a funnel to prevent spills and add the recommended oil until it reaches the upper level mark on the inspection window.

   Guidelines:

   • Make sure the motorcycle is upright and on a level surface.
   • Do not overfill above the upper level mark, as overfilling can damage the engine.
   • Ensure no foreign objects enter the oil filler opening.
   • Wipe up any oil spills immediately to prevent slipping hazards.

2. Reinstall the Oil Fill Cap:

   • Securely reinstall the oil fill cap once you have added the necessary oil. Make sure it is tight to prevent leaks.

Warning

• Overfilling with oil or operating with insufficient oil can cause severe damage to your engine.
• Do not mix different brands and grades of oil, as they may affect lubrication and clutch operation.

Engine Oil Specifications

Engine oil consumption varies depending on riding conditions and the time elapsed since the last oil change. Regularly check your engine oil level and add the recommended engine oil if necessary. Replace dirty or old oil as soon as possible.

Selecting the Engine Oil

  • JASO T 903 Standard: MA
  • SAE Standard: 10W-30

• JASO T 903 Standard: This is an index for engine oils for 4-stroke motorcycle engines. There are two classes: MA and MB. The MA classification is recommended.

• SAE Standard: This grades oils by their viscosity. The recommended viscosity for these motorcycles is 10W-30.

• API Classification: This specifies the quality and performance rating of engine oils. Use SJ or higher oils, excluding those marked as “Energy Conserving” or “Resource Conserving” on the circular API service symbol.

Recommended Engine Oil

For optimal performance, use the following engine oil:

• API Service Classification: SJ or higher (avoid oils labeled as Energy Conserving or Resource Conserving).
• SAE Viscosity: 10W-30
• JASO T 903 Standard: MA
• Brand Recommendation: Pro Honda GN4 4-stroke oil (USA & Canada) or Honda 4-stroke oil, or an equivalent motorcycle oil.

Engine Oil Capacity

Ensure you use the correct amount of engine oil when changing it. The capacity varies slightly between models and depending on whether you're changing the oil filter or conducting a complete disassembly.
